The super group consists of Gigan, Jet Jaguar (MF Grimm), Kamackeris, King Cesar (X-Ray), King Ghidra (MF Doom), Kong, Spiega, Megalon and Rodan. You could best think of them as Wu-Tang but using monster flicks instead of Kung Fu.

I would imagine that most people would pick up the album just for the MF Doom or Grimm content, but Grimm isn't on the album at all (incarcerated at the time, but came up with the album idea) and Doom only raps on one track (MIC Line). Even without the two MF's, the others Czars on the mic and X-Ray on the beats are more than capable and have their own distinctive sound.

X-Ray produces the bulk of the tracks (Doom does a few), his production is raw, minimalistic and almost cinematic at times. He frequently mixes piano with drum loops, not dissimilar to some of RZA's work. Skits featuring samples from Kaiju movies are thrown in between tracks which works well. All of the mc's have a raw sound, with Kamackeris' slick rhymes and flow and Rodan's relentless delivery making them the stand out performers.

The first track M.I.N.Y.A is the only track that instantly stands out, X-Ray puts down an incredibly funky beat with Kamackeris opening with one of the albums best verses. The rest of the tracks feature great production and verses, but just don't stand out as much as M.I.N.Y.A. The only weak and out of place track is the Doom produced 'Comin' at You', which has an upbeat synth sound and an almost cheesy female hook.

20 tracks deep, "Escape From Monsta Island!" is an LP that you can listen to over and over again and find something new in it every time. It overflows with beats, lyrics, ideas, and energy. The concept is extremely original and none of the producers or emcees stray away from the project's intention. If you like your hip-hop underground and dirty with hunger and extreme force, this album is for you.

1 What's the Name of This Place?
2 M.I.N.Y.A (Kamackeris, Rodan, Kong, Megalon & X-Ray)
3 F@#K Y'all N!@@#'s (Kamackeris, Megalon & X-Ray)
4 WitchCraft (Rodan, Megalon, Kong, Kamackeris, Spiega, King Caesar & X-Ray)
5 1,2... 1,2 (Kong, Megalon, Rodan & King Geedorah)
6 Scientific Civilization (skit)(King Geedorah)
7 MIC Line (King Geedorah)
8 Poizon Windz (Megalon, Rodan, Gigan & X-Ray)
9 Under Pressure (Spiega, Megalon, Rodan, Kong & X-Ray)
10 Became A Monsta (Spiega & X-Ray)
11 There's A Legend (skit) (X-Ray)
12 Out My Mind (King Caesar, Kamackeris, Megalon & X-Ray)
13 Warning (Kong & X-Ray)
14 Make It Squash (Kong, Megalon, King Caesar, Rodan & King Geedorah)
15 Gunz 'n' Swordz (Gigan, Megalon & X-Ray)
16 Sumthin' to Prove (Rodan & X-Ray)
17 Live Son Of A Bitch (skit) (X-Ray)
18 Comin' at You (Megalon, Rodan, Kamackeris, Kong & King Geedorah)
19 Take Control (Kamackeris & X-Ray)
20 Escape From Monsta Isle (Rodan, Megalon, Kong, Spiega & King Geedorah)

Download Torrent

Kylesa - Static Tensions

After a long winter, our humble weblog is back with some great news... HEAVY METAL IS NOT DEAD!!!

I've been searching high and low in the music news lately, trying to find some good new underground independent metal bands, and for my pleasant surprise I actually found a couple of bands I actually liked. Kylesa is one of them.

This USA quintet hails from Georgia and delivers a complex, dark and sexy mix of psychedelic metal. The band's sound reminded me, in anti-chronological order, of Desert Sessions, Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss and Black Sabbath. Great company, might I add.

They have recently released their fourth album, "Static Tensions", a mature and interesting record that will last long in your portable music device.

To reinforce that we are not here to steal anything from anyone, but rather to promote good music and honest bands, here's a few links for your personal amusement:

Kylesa - Official website (I wish they had the lyrics of their songs in there)

Kylesa Merch - On this part of their website you can buy beautiful t-shirts and vinyl pressings of the new album. Sweet!

Kylesa Store - Their visual material is very nice. On this website you can buy some cool t-shirts.

While you wait for your vinyl and your t-shirt to get inside your mailbox, you can listen to this new album here:

Download Torrent

Brazil 1960s Rock

After a long and dark winter, we are finally back with a giant release: a lot of brazilian rock records from the 1960s. Early works included recordings produced by legendary audio pioneer Joe Meek.

During the 1960s, Screaming Lord Sutch was known for his horror-themed stage show, as well as for usually dressing as Jack the Ripper, pre-dating the shock rock antics of Alice Cooper by several years. He often started the show by coming out of a big black coffin.

Sutch's album Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends featured legends such as Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, and Noel Redding. The album was re-released as "Smoke & Fire".

For his follow-up album, Hands of Jack the Ripper, Sutch assembled a group of British rock celebrities for a concert at the Carshalton Park Rock 'n' Roll Festival. Musicians appearing on the record included Ritchie Blackmore, Keith Moon and Noel Redding.

In the Rolling Stones song "Get off of my cloud" the guy who shows up "all dressed up just like a Union Jack" in the song was Lord Sutch, presumably uninvited in Mick Jagger's room.

Download Torrent

The Ventures

The Ventures are an instrumental rock band formed in 1958 in Tacoma, Washington. The band, formed by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, two masonry workers, has had an enduring impact on the development of music worldwide, having sold over 100 million records, and are to date the best-selling instrumental band of all time. In 2008, the Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Their music has been cited by many famed guitarists as an influence; indeed, their virtuosity, experimentation with guitar effects, and unique sound laid the groundwork for innumerable groups, earning them the moniker "The Band that Launched a Thousand Bands". They have also contributed to the surf music genre, though they are not, as popularly perceived, strictly a surf band. Though their popularity in the United States waned in the 1970s, the group remains revered in Japan, where they still tour regularly to this day.

Download Torrent

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Tarkus

Tarkus is the second album by British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in 1971.

Greg Lake stated in an early interview that he viewed Tarkus as a representation of the military-industrial complex, and that his lyrics were about that, and about the futility of war and strife.

On the album cover, made after the music was created and recorded, Tarkus is depicted as a half armadillo/half tank creature, born from an egg erupted from a volcano.

The inner gatefold sleeve features a sequence of pictures depicting battles between Tarkus and other half-mechanical creatures, until its eventual defeat by a manticore. This coastal city just south of Los Angeles ignited the initial explosion of hardcore bands. Including bassist Roger Rogerson and drummer Lucky Lehrer, the band recorded their debut album, "Group Sex", in 1980 on Frontier Records. Containing 14 tracks, the songs ranged in length from 1:35 to 27 seconds, taking the hyper blast of punk to the next extreme. With the release of the album, an appearance in the documentary film about L.A. punk The Decline of Western Civilization, and their incendiary live performances, the group's stature was assured in the budding hardcore community.

Their second LP, 1982's "Wild in the Streets", continued the intensity while injecting a humorous slant into the music by covering '60s pop hits "Just Like Me"/"Put a Little Love in Your Heart," applied with their slamdancing aggression. The joke was expanded on Golden Shower of Hits, their third album, released in 1983. The second time around they tackled "Along Comes Mary," "Afternoon Delight," "Having My Baby," and "Love Will Keep Us Together." Golden Shower also marked the incorporation of a few longer songs that hovered around the three-minute mark, including "Under the Gun," "High Price on Our Heads," and "Rats of Reality." At this point the band took a two-year break, which found Hetson joining the newly formed Bad Religion, taking on guitar duties for both bands well into the next decade.

Download Torrent

Black Diamond Heavies - Every Damn Time

Stripping the deep blues to its frame and running the music through a big stack of amps while shaking it into a cold sweat, the Black Diamond Heavies are a band from East Nashville, TN, who prove that in terms of sonic impact and soulful energy, size doesn't matter much at all.

The Black Diamond Heavies were formed by keyboard man and vocalist John Wesley Myers, Mark "Porkchop" Holder on guitar and harmonica, and drummer Van Campbell. Myers was previously a member of the feral blues-punk combo the Immortal Lee County Killers, while Campbell had kept time with the Invisibles and the Rum Circus.

The Black Diamond Heavies started gigging in 2004 and self-released an EP called You Damn Right in 2005. The record and especially the BDHs' wildly frantic live shows won them a rabid fan following, especially in the South, but in early 2006 Holder amicably left the band, unhappy with the rigors of life on the road.

Myers and Campbell opted not only to continue without Holder, but to not replace him; stripped down to a two-piece, the band's music became even more raw and intense than before, and in the summer of 2006 the band scored a record deal with noted garage punk label Alive Records. The Black Diamond Heavies' first full-length album, Every Damn Time, was released in early 2007.

1.Fever in My Blood
2.All to Hell
3.Leave It in the Road
4.Let Me Coco
5.Poor Brown Sugar
6.Stitched in Sin
7.White Bitch
8.Signs
9.Might Be Right
10.Guess You Gone and Fucked It All Up

Download Torrent

ESG - A South Bronx Story

ESG (Emerald, Sapphire and Gold) are a band from the South Bronx, New York, U.S.. The band originally consisted of sisters Maria Scroggins (congas, vocals), Renee Scroggins (guitar, vocals), and Valerie Scroggins (drums), and friend Leroy Glover (bass). ESG have been influential in a wide range of musical genres, including hip hop, post punk, disco, and dance-punk.

ESG's music is centered around complex polyrhythms, a funky bass and pop-flavored guitar.

The group's work had become popular among hip-hop artists searching for samples, with such acts as TLC, the Wu-Tang Clan, the Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, Gang Starr, Tricky, Jay-Dee (J-Dilla) and indie rockers like Unrest and Liars. The group addressed this issue on the 1992 12" EP Sample Credits Don't Pay Our Bills.

Major kudos to Universal Sound for compiling ESG's best works for A South Bronx Story, a crucial document of sparse, old school funk. Until 2000, the group's scant material had been nearly impossible to find.

Download Torrent

The Sugar Hill Records Story [Box Set]

Sugar Hill Records was the first rap and hip-hop label, giving many listeners their first exposure to the urban rhyming and scratching that transformed pop music during the '80s. Like most indie labels, they had troubles with finances and distribution; eventually, that situation resulted in their records remaining out of print during the rise of the hip-hop during the late '80s and '90s. The five-disc Sugar Hill Records Story remedies this situation by collecting all of the label's classic A-sides, many in their full-length mixes, on one set. Tracks by the Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, and the Treacherous Three are commonplace and remain excellent, but the true revelation of the box set is how strong largely forgotten cuts by Spoonie Gee, the Funky 4 + 1, Trouble Funk, the Sequence, Super Wolf, and West Street Mob are -- these are supremely funky, infectious and inventive cuts, which have been made familiar through samples and quotations on modern rap records. Another surprise is how integrated this music is -- male and female rappers trade lines without hesitation, and there is none of the misogyny or violence that characterized gangsta rap. But that doesn't mean the old-school rap on The Sugar Hill Records Story sounds dated -- much of this bright, elastic electro-funk has provided the foundation for '90s hits by the likes of the Beastie Boys and Dr. Dre. But the most surprising thing of all is how The Sugar Hill Records Story barely loses momentum over the course of five discs. There is the occasional dull spot or oddity (check out the bizarre B-52's rip-off "At the Ice Arcade" by the Chilly Kids) that interrupts the flow, but the music is consistently strong, even on the fifth disc. It was inevitable that The Sugar Hill Records Story would be an important historical document, but what makes it truly essential is how rich, diverse, and timeless the music actually is.

                       DISC 1

                     1. Further, the group were the among the first wave of Bronx crews to release records after the initial success of the Sugarhill Gang in 1979. The Funky 4 consisted of DJ Breakout, K.K. Rockwell, Keith Keith, Lil' Rodney Cee, Jazzy Jeff, and the "plus one" -- Sha Rock.

A unique aspect of the group was that Sha Rock wasn't portrayed as a sex object but was more or less considered equal among the male members of the group. Aside from the novelty of having a woman in their ranks, they are one of the most influential but overlooked old-school hip-hop groups -- having been sampled by a wide assortment of later hip-hop artists including the Beastie Boys (on their Paul's Boutique record). Along with Grandmaster Flash, they began recording 12" singles for Enjoy Records -- releasing what is considered the longest rap song ever: "Rappin' and Rockin' the House" (at over 15 minutes, it outlasts the lengthy "Rapper's Delight"). After they grew displeased with what they considered to be Enjoy's poor distribution, they followed Grandmaster Flash to the Sugarhill Records label. There they cut the all-time classic "That's the Joint" but never went on to release a full-length record. After only moderate success, the group went their separate ways in the early '80s with Lil' Rodney Cee and K.K. Rockwell forming Double Trouble and Sha Rock joining Lisa Lee and Debbie Dee as part of US Girls (who appeared in the 1984 film Beat Street). This 2001 release is a anthology of singles and unissued tracks by these early hip-hop innovators.

Download Torrent

Baby Charles - Baby Charles (2008)

Baby Charles are a special band. That means, of course, that the disc is filled with funk records -- specifically ones with extended rhythm breaks and grooves that provided ideal instrumental backdrops for rappers. The Genesis leans toward the obscure, where even the most familiar names (James Brown, the Isley Brothers, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, the Jackson 5) are represented with unfamiliar songs, and the remainder of the compilation is filled with cult artists (Baby Huey, Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band, Black Heat, Rhythm Heritage). While many of these songs may be unfamiliar, there are beats and samples that have been popularized through sampling, which makes listening to the disc fascinating. Unfortunately, it never becomes truly intoxicating, since it's a historical recording that's designed for education, not entertainment, but anyone interested in the birth of hip-hop will find it necessary listening.

1- James Brown - Give It Up Or Turn It a Loose (in the jungle groove remix)
2- The Isley Brothers - Get Into Something
3- Booker T & The M.G.'s - Melting Pot
4- Baby Huey - Listen To Me
5- Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar Band - Scorpio
6- The Jimmy Castor Bunch - It's Just Begun
7- Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band - Apache
8- The Jackson 5 - Hum Along And Dance
9- Black Heat - Love The Life You Live
10- Rhythm Heritage - Theme From S.W.A.T. The record that broke the doors down was "Rapper's Delight," which is represented here, like the ten other tracks on the compilation, in an extended version that allows both the beats and the rhymes to flourish. Where most early rap compilations focus on records that made an impact on the R&B charts, The Birth of the Rap Records is devoted to the underground. There are a number of familiar songs here -- "The Breaks," "The Message" -- but the majority of the disc is devoted to underappreciated artists like the Sequence, Spoonie Gee, "Love Bug" Starski, Davy DMX and Funky Four Plus One More, or unfamiliar songs by artsits like Afrika Bambaataa and the Treacherous Three. There are more hits on The Golden Age than on any other disc in The History of Rap, featuring classics by such artists as Run-D.M.C. At that time, rap was becoming more diverse, boasting different rhyming and production styles -- where early rap was similiar stylistically, there was a world of difference between the dizzying hardcore of Public Enemy and the comedy shenanigans on Biz Markie. The musical depth of rap is evident on The Golden Age -- it certainly does not all sound the same -- and while it does overlook some artists, it nevertheless is an invaluable sampler, capturing the essence of the era.

1- Run Dmc - Rock Box
2 -Whodini - Friends
3- Whodini - Five Minutes Of Funk
4- Fat Boys - Jail House Rap
5- UTFO - Roxanne, Roxanne
6- MC Shan - The Bridge
7- Public Enemy - Rebel Without A Pause
8- Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded (album version)
9- Big Daddy Kane - Raw
10- Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock - It Takes Two
11- Biz Markie - Vapors
12- Biz Markie - Just A Friend

Download Torrent

AFRICA 100 (afrobeat)

Afrobeat is a sound and a movement, music and a state of mind. It's the joyous awakening of a continent from a colonial nightmare and the crushing realization that the nightmare isn't over yet, anguish and happiness whipped together with traditional drums, cheap guitars, and even cheaper amps.

Afrobeat is a term with no solid definition, like punk, rock, or soul, although it may be all three of those things. No one knows who first used the word, but as far as history is concerned, it belongs to Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the late Nigerian giant through whom any understanding of the sound of 1970s Africa must pass. In the most limited sense, you could say that Afrobeat is the cinematic, polyrhythmic, symphonic funk sound that Fela developed with superhuman drummer Tony Allen, but it's much more than that.

For what has been recovered, distribution can be spotty, and the shop that has two things you're looking for is usually missing four other things you want to check out. Compilers of these sounds must track down the musicians, hunt out masters in forgotten, crumbling pressing plants, and sift through bins of scratched, dusty vinyl in the markets of Accra, Conakry, and Lagos looking for the lost slab of brilliant funk or the 45 with the highlife A-side and the totally unexpected fuzz-rock B-side. The rewards of those efforts have been huge, though, and I'm pleased this music is increasingly getting the spotlight it deserves.

Compiled by music writer Joe Tangari to accompany "The Indestructible Beat", his five-part April 2005 Pitchfork feature on the origins and history of Afrobeat and related genres, this home-assembled box set compiles 99 songs (a "vinyl-only" bonus track is unavailable here), and spans from the late 1950s to the present day, with a special focus on the genre's most active and fertile decade, the 1970s. Containing almost nine hours of music, it is now the most definitive collection of Afrobeat known to exist, and possibly the most thorough introduction to the music available.

For the uninitiated, Afrobeat, in its purest form, it is intensely beat-heavy, drawing as much inspiration from American funk, soul and jazz as from aboriginal chants and rhythms. Allmusic.com states that its musicians tended to favor large ensembles, extended grooves and improvised jam sessions, but that at its core it was dance music. Over the course of the the 1970s, however, many varieties and mutations would spring up, each drawing from more distant forms. On this collection, influences range from James Brown's good-foot funk, to Detroit's Motown R&B and soul, to Lee "Scratch" Perry and King Tubby's dub reggae, to even Serge Gainsbourg's sultry French whispers.

>> Disc 01
101. The band released just one album, the self-titled "Butter 08" in 1996 on the Beastie Boys' now defunct Grand Royal record label. The album features guest performances by future Cibo Matto members Timo Ellis and Sean Lennon as well as a performance by filmmaker Evan Bernard who directed music videos for several Grand Royal artists as well as for Cibo Matto and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

In addition to their one album, a remix of their song "Degobrah" appears on the soundtrack for "City of Industry", a 1996 film featuring Harvey Keitel.

The band was allegedly formed when the members spent an evening recording the 1995 Cibo Matto single "Know Your Chicken" together. A demo was then sent to Mike D, who immediately signed Butter 08 to Grand Royal Records.

Download Torrent

Born Bad

The Born Bad compilation series collects together the original music that inspired bands like The Cramps. You can't go wrong with this series, although they can be kind of short since I think they were originally intended as vinyl compilations, and sometimes are sourced from vinyl sources.

It's a great compilation series if you are curious to hear the original rockabilly and garage punk artists that inspired Born Bad 2The Cramps, like Hasil Adkins, Wanda Jackson, Andre Williams, Charlie Feathers, and Richard Berry, with some later 60s groups thrown in every once in awhile, like The Sonics, Tommy James, Paul Revere, and the Kasenetz-Katz Super Circus.

Volume 1 features the original versions of Goo Goo Muck by Ronnie Cook & the Gaylads, Uranium Rock by Warren Smith, The Crusher by The Novas, Rockin' Bones by Ronnie Dawson, Strychnine by the Sonics and Funnel Of Love by Wanda Jackson. All songs covered by the Cramps, or in the case of Funnel of Love, members of The Cramps helped Wanda Jackson re-record a version of that song in 2003 on her album Heart Trouble.

Volume 2 has original versions of Love Me by the Phantoms, I Can't Hardly Stand It by Charlie Feathers, She Said by Hasil Adkins, and Lonesome Town by Ricky Nelson. Born Bad 3For a nice change of pace here, things get a bit more 60s garage rock on Hanky Panky by Tommy James and the Shondells, Hungry by Paul Revere & the Raiders and Quick Joey Small by the Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus.

Highlights from Volume 3 include the trio of songs based around the Surfin' Bird phenomenon, including Mama Oom Mow Mow and The Bird's The Word by the Rivingtons and Surfin' Bird by The Trashmen. Andre Williams makes his appearance on two of his classic tunes Bacon Fat and Jail Bait. And the original version of Can Your Hossie Do The Dog by Del Raney's Umbrellas is heard here (the tune that later inspired Born Bad 4The Cramps own tune Can Your Pussy Do the Dog?).

There's a brilliantly hyper version of Heartbreak Hotel by Buddy Love on Volume 4. There's also the original Richard Berry version of Louie, Louie here. The one-two punch of Red Crayola's Hurricane Fighter Plane and The Standells' Baracuda were the definite highlight for me, with a couple of later mid-60s tracks with a pulsing manic sound. Also, stick around for the hilarious Mad Magazine related It's A Gas by Born Bad 5Alfred E. Neuman.

Volume 5 includes a different version of Hanky Panky, this time from the Raindrops (a girl group which featured songwriting partners Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry). You can also find the raw resurrection of the old Jimmie Rodgers' song Mule Skinner Blues by the Fendermen from 1960, a very early version of garage rock music.

Volume 6 includes another crazed and truly un-hinged psychobilly Elvis cover in Jailhouse Rock by Dean Carter recorded 10 years after the original Elvis version, in 1967, out of time and in a different place. This puts the psycho in the definition of psychobilly. Born Bad 5There's also He's Waiting by The Sonics, Dirty Robber by The Wailers, Yum Yum Yamaha by Carol Conners & Cycles, Mini Skirt Blues by the Flower Children, Hipsville 29 B.C. by The Sparkles, and Green Door by Jim Lowe, all music to drive you batty.

Download Torrent
